Man fitting security light

With the clocks going back at the end of this month (October 29), the evenings are about to get darker. At this time of the year it’s especially important to think about home security and what can you do to make your home as secure as possible during the autumn and winter months.

Whether you’re a homeowner or you rent your property, feeling secure in your home is vitally important. Insurance company, Aviva claim that household thefts rise by five per cent in the week that the clocks go back alone. The darker evenings make it easier for thieves to observe properties and to approach them unchallenged.

One way to tackle this is to install external security lighting. It’s not uncommon during the winter months to get home from work after it gets dark. One trick to make your home look like it is occupied, is to use automatic timer-switches to turn your lights and radios on. Also, if you’re planning to go away during the festive period, you can set them to come on in the evenings to give the illusion that someone is at home.

Whilst many homeowners are tempted to leave a spare key ‘hidden’ somewhere on their property, sadly this is the first thing criminals will look for - and the easiest way for them to gain ‘unforced’ access to your property.  It is also common practice to leave friends or family a spare set of keys whilst you are away.  A locked metal key safe, such as the Supra C500 KeySafeTM, provides a secure alternative method of externally storing keys to the exterior of a property.

You can use a key safe to give friends and family access to your property in a safe manner. What’s more - you can change the code as many times as you want, which is especially useful if you are using it for those who don’t need access once you are back home.

Finally, visible alarms will deter opportunist burglars and increase the security of your home – but make sure your security products are backed by the Secured by Design scheme, such as the Supra C500 Key Safe, to ensure a high level of security standards.
